Heikkerö works slowly, the journey from an idea to a finished piece may take a year or even longer. When the theoretical stage is complete, he embarks on the long journey of creating the painting. Heikkerö describes the experience: “With a big painting I’m in the forecourts of Hell where I’m driven by the most delicate and primitive of instincts.”  Painting pulls him in, immerses him in the process. Here Heikkerö makes use of a sort of mind map technique. He writes down thoughts that occur to him at various stages of the process and pins the notes on the walls. This collection of notes acts as a repository of Heikkerö's “key ideas”. For an outsider, the notes offer glimpses into the content of Heikkerö’s art.
